Bizarre & Beautiful Noses is a compelling nonfiction book for young readers that describes noses and the sense of smell in a variety of creatures including mammals, reptiles, and insects. Even the sense of smell in the human animal is covered. Lavishly illustrated with both pictures and drawings, this book will quickly capture the interest of any child who is interested in animals or how things work. The text describes not only what the sense of smell is, but also how the different animals use it - to find food, mates, and to stay out of trouble.
Bizarre & Beautiful Noses begins with a brief introduction to the sense of smell (olfaction), both in regards to how things give off scent and how this scent is 'read' by the various olfactory organs found on various creatures. From here, the book moves on to details about individual animals and insects. The only drawback to this otherwise fascinating book is that the entries are presented in a random format, and the book does not have an index. On the positive side, however, because the entries are random, you will need to thumb through the entire book if you are looking for something in particular - and along the way you are sure to discover some unique facts that you were unaware of.
Each entry is presented in a two-page format. One page is given over to a full page picture of the animal or insect in question, while the facing page provides information on the entry, including the scientific names of the creature, information on how its sense of smell works, along with intriguing tidbits of information on the creature. Each entry also includes a section, highlighted in red, that provides an informative factoid or two about each creature.
Covering a range of creatures including Bats, Prairie Dogs, Snakes, Mosquitoes, Bees, Gerbils, Lemurs, Cats, Salamanders, Turtles, and more, this is an outstanding book for young readers that will not only introduce them to the world of smell - but which will also encourage them to read!
