Tips for Buying a New Dishwasher
By Rochelle Caviness
Dishwashers are available in a variety of colors and finishes, and with variable internal organization.
When making a decision on which dishwasher to purchases, take into consideration the size of your family, the type of entertaining you do, and the features you want in a machine.
Energy Efficiency
Energy efficient dishwashers will help cut your electric bills.
When shopping for a dishwasher, be sure to compare the energy ratings of the various models. On each machine should be "Energy Rating Label" or "Energy Star Rating" that provides this information.
The energy-rating sticker will give you a basic idea on how much you can expect to pay in a year to run the machine and for heating the water used in the dishwashers. Two figures will be given, one based on using a gas water heater, and one based on using an electric water heater.
If your power rates vary by the time of day, consider investing in a dishwasher that has a timer. This will enable you to set the machine to run at night when the rates are cheaper.
Also, consider investing in a dishwasher that has a stainless steel interior. These machines cost a little extra, but they also conduct heat better and allow for faster drying.
Water Efficiency
Compared to older models, newer dishwashers have vastly improved their water efficiency.
Select a machine that offers the option of running an economy or half-load cycle. This reduces water waste when running the machine at less than full capacity.
Noise Abatement
Don't buy a noisy dishwasher. With all the new 'quiet' models available, there is no need to settle for a noise monster.
Many models are so quiet it can be difficult to tell when they are running.
Controls
Most dishwashers are now available with either manual or electronic controls. An electronic control panel can be invaluable if you want to be able to program your machine to run at a specific time.
Accessibility Options
Dishwashers that can be installed at various heights to accommodate wheelchair users are now available.
Some models come with vocal or brailled controls for the visually impaired.
Touch pad controls are also available for those who cannot manipulate conventional dial controls.
Interior Arraignments
Many of the newer dishwashers come with adjustable shelves that allow you to rearrange the layout of the shelves. This gives you the freedom to adjust the spacers in the shelves in order to accommodate your load requirements - such as making room for larger items.
Size
When referring to the size of the dishwasher, most people are referring to the carrying capacity of the machine.
Standard models (60cm wide) will hold 12-16 place settings.
Slimline models (45cm wide) will hold 7-9 place settings.
Compact models will hold 4-6 place settings.
Most modern dishwashers are built-in, under the counter. Often these dishwashers have panels into which you can insert facing material that matches your cabinets or other appliances.
Portable models are also available that hook up to your kitchen sink.
