In polite society, one simply does not talk about gastrointestinal complaints. While it may be acceptable to talk about your lumbago or your recent nose job, most would be aghast if you brought up the topic of your intestines. This reluctance to speak about a natural function often extends to some people even being reluctant to speak to their doctor about problems they might be having. This can result in needless worry. It may also cause you to delay seeking, and obtaining, proper treatment. The Sensitive Gut, presented by the Harvard Medical School, offers a concise and 'private' overview of the gastrointestinal tract, the various problems that it is subject to, and available treatment options. This book will help you discern how you can best handle your problem, and to determine when you should seek out medical treatment.

Conditions discussed in this book include gatroesophageal reflux disease, dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, diarrhea, excessive gas, diseases that have symptoms similar to IBS, and how the intestinal tract changes with age. The causes and symptoms of each condition are discussed, as well as the steps you can take to relieve the symptoms. This book also includes a chapter on food allergies and intolerance, and the ways in which a person's reaction to a specific food or foods can cause intestinal disorders.

Besides providing typical medical information about gastrointestinal problems, and methods of preventing and treating them, this book also discusses alternative treatments, such as herbal treatments and the role that emotional well-being plays in keeping the gut tranquil. This book includes diagrams of the intestinal tract, a glossary of common terms, a list of drugs used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, and a resource list of organizations from which you can obtain more information. In short, this is a well-written, readable resource guide that offers the reader a guided tour of The Sensitive Gut.
