Macrobiotics is a philosophy, and a lifestyle. In The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics, Jessica Porter explains the philosophical foundations of macrobiotics and how macrobiotics can be 'used' to improve your health, physical, and mental well being. The basic tenet of macrobiotics is that we are really what we eat - food affects not only our health and how we feel, but also it impacts our entire way of life, both physically and spiritually. As such, the macrobiotic diet is rich in natural foods and whole-grains, and as a philosophy it encourages harmony with nature and living a holistic lifestyle. In this book, Porter examines the origins of the macrobiotic philosophy, and the benefits it offers practitioners.

The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics is organized into two parts. The first part details the philosophical underpinnings of macrobiotics and the teachings of George Ohsawa, the founder of the macrobiotic movement. The second part of this book is devoted to information on how to incorporate macrobiotics into your diet and your lifestyle. For those that wish to understand the foundations of macrobiotics, the first part of this book is essential readings. For those just interested in 'eating' macrobiotically, the second, and largest portion of this text, will be of most interest.

Regarding becoming a macrobioticist, Porter provides helpful information on how to convert your pantry to one stocked only with macrobiotic foods, and how to cook them. As important, she discusses those foods which should be avoided or used in moderations, such as red meat and sugar. She has also included more than 80 recipes that illustrate the breadth of hearty and tasty foods that are part of the macrobiotic diet. The recipes included range from Tofu "Egg" Salad and Steamed Sourdough Bread to Rutabaga Fries and Apple-Blueberry Crisp. Meal planning and preparation tips, and sample menus are provided. A handy glossary of terms is also included.

Written in a witty and friendly style, The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics is user friendly and nontechnical. Although written specifically with the needs of women in mind, this book will benefit both men and women embarking on a macrobiotic lifestyle. Covering the basics, from determining the ying and yang of various foods to the effects on your body as it goes through a cleansing process after beginning a macrobiotic diet, The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics serves as an excellent introduction to macrobiotics.
