Jews have lived in just about every country in the world, from Mongolia to Zimbabwe. In each country that the Jews have found themselves in they have adapted local recipes to meet with the dietary laws found in the Torah. Those adaptations that became popular, easily migrated from one Jewish community to another. This is one of the reasons that Jewish cooking has, at its very core, an international flavor.

In the Kosher Kettle: International Adventures in Jewish Cooking, Sybil Ruth Kaplan has compiled over 350 kosher recipes from around the world. These recipes highlight the breadth and scope of the Jewish culinary experience and they provide cooks with a wealth of dishes to add to their repertoire. The recipes found in this book come from 27 different countries including Belgium, Hungry, Greece, India, Israel, New Zealand, Russia, and Thailand. The recipes are fully indexed by country/area, and by subject such as appetizers, potato, and Rosh Hashanah.

The recipes in this cookbook are organized thematically - Beverages, Soups, Fish, Cakes, etc... Each recipe is also annotated with information about whether the given recipe is parve, milchig (dairy), or fleishig (meat), where the recipe is from, plus who contributed each given recipe. Additionally, this cookbook is enhanced by the inclusion of a section offering the Basic Guidelines of Kashrut.

The subtitle of this cookbook, International Adventures in Jewish Cooking, is an apt title. The recipes are easy to follow with clear, step-by-step instructions on how to compile each recipe. The recipes run the gamut from Spaghetti Kugel to Korean Chicken with Vegetables. A couple of the more unique recipes that I found in this cookbook include Pareve Chopped Liver made from eggplants and No-Flour Peanut Butter Cookies that is not only excellent, but a wonderful recipe if you are cooking for someone who has a wheat/flour allergy.

Besides a wealth of 'secular' international kosher recipes such as Chicken Cacciatore and Rice Salad Primavera, this cookbook is also stuffed with traditionally 'Jewish' recipes . In the Kosher Kettle you will find everything from cholent to kugels, plus a variety of holiday specific recipes. Kosher Kettle: International Adventures in Jewish Cooking is as much fun browse through for ideas as it is to cook from. This cookbook is perfect for both beginning and seasoned cooks and it will make an excellent addition to the library of any cook looking to add an international flair to their repertoire.
