Mometrix Media has produced two wonderful study aids for use by those studying to take the ASBOG Fundamentals of Geology (FG) and the Practice of Geology (PG) examinations. These aids are their ASBOG Exam Secrets Study Guide and their ASBOG Exam Flashcard Study System. If you've read my review of the ASBOG Exam Secrets Study Guide, you'll already know that the study guide is just that - a guide that details what you need to know for the exam, but it does not reinforce that information. The ASBOG Exam Flashcard Study System, on the other hand, provides you with a way to drill yourself on the information you need to know, to practice answering questions, and to test your understanding of the information that you need to know to pass the ASBOG exams. Combined the two study aids offer you the opportunity to really focus on what you need to know, rather than simply trying to learn everything there is to know about geology.

The flashcards in the ASBOG Exam Flashcard Study System come in sheets, with six cards to a sheet. The sheets are perforated, and it is quite easy to separate all the cards. This may seem like a time-consuming step, but it does offer you the opportunity to really take a look at the cards and to see how the information on the cards is organized. These are not business card sized flashcards. Rather, they measure about 3.5" by 4.25". This large size is needed because they contain a lot of information!

As with the companion study guide, the information on the flashcards is aligned with the content domains covered in the ASBOG exams. On the front side of each card is a notation of the content domain being covered such as 'Field Methods / Geophysics / Graphical' or 'Engineering Geology'. This information is followed by a question or topic such as "Explain in detail what causes water hardness" or "Discuss the different grades of coal, and rank them as a function of increasing metamorphism." On the back side of each card is a detailed answer to each question, along with any relevant equations that you might need to know or use to answer the question. There is a lot of information contained on these flashcards, but if you can answer the majority of the questions, you should find that you'll do very well on the ASBOG exams.

Created by the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG), the ASBOG exams are designed to measure your theoretical knowledge of geology (FG exam), and the application of this information (PG exam). The tests are not designed to make you figure out puzzles or to see what you can do if presented with a question outside the content domains covered in the tests. Rather they are designed to merely test what you should have learned in school, and how you apply that information in the real world. If you already have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of geology, and if you master the core concepts detailed in these flashcards, you should possess a sufficient body of knowledge to pass the tests.

However, to master these flashcards, you will have to be diligent and stick to your study routine. Be sure to work with these cards in the months leading up to the exam, and run through them again just before the test, this way you are working on both your long term and short term memory. When you get the flashcards, be sure to look at the back of the cover sheet. There you will find instructions on how to use the Leitner Method to study the flashcards in order to maximize your retention of the information, and to do so in the least amount of time. The only item missing from this flashcard systems is a box to put the cards in. Therefore, You will need to provide your own box or boxes. Shoeboxes are recommended, but I found that an old CD storage box worked very well, as would any type of box that was big enough to hold the cards. You will need 1 - 6 boxes, depending upon how you decide to set them up.

As with the ASBOG Exam Secrets Study Guide, the ASBOG Exam Flashcard Study System will help you to prepare for both the FG and PG exams. This is possible because the exams have a great deal of overlap in the information covered. If you want information about what types of information are covered in each exam, be sure to go to the ASBOG website and download the newest edition of the Professional Geologist Candidate Handbook.

The information presented on these cards is clear and precise. If you have a general geology background, even if you have not taken a course in a given subject, such as Geochemistry, you should be able to follow and understand the information as presented. If by some chance you still do not understand the question, and the answer, you will know what exactly what information you need to study and after a quick read through a relevant textbook, you should be good to go. Best of all, the ASBOG Exam Flashcard Study System will not only help you prepare for the ASBOG exams, but the information should also prove useful if you need to do a general geology review for another geology test or program.

A word about purchasing these flashcards and the related study guide . . . Most people tend to automatically head over to Amazon - nothing wrong with that. However, take a peak at the Mometrix website. Not only do they sell these two study aids at a substantial discount when compared to Amazon.com, but they also offer a money back guarantee and you'll get the most up-to-date version. In addition, if you are looking to make a bulk purchase, they offer additional discounts for institutions!
