Let's face it, trying to prepare for the ASBOG Fundamentals of Geology (FG) and the Practice of Geology (PG) examinations can be a major pain in the backside. Not only do you have to jump through some major bureaucratic hoops in order to get permission to sit the exams, but you also have to have a fairly broad familiarity with just about everything related to geology. If you just graduated from college, this might not be a major problem. However, if you've been out of school for a while or specialize in one aspect of geology, you might not be up on all the latest developments and trends in the entire field. So what are you to do? Get a hold of a slew of textbooks on every relevant subject and study nonstop? Of course not, after all, even if you wanted to, who has the time?
Fortunately, there are several companies and organizations that provide courses and study materials to help you prepare for the exams. One of these companies is Mometrix Media. This is a company that specializes in preparing study materials for those taking standardized tests. In the realm of geology, they provide two invaluable aids for studying for the ASBOG exams: their ASBOG Exam Secrets Study Guide and their ASBOG Exam Flashcard Study System. For the purposes of this review, I'll just focus on the ASBOG Exam Secrets Study Guide. Click Here to jump to my review of the ASBOG Exam Flashcard Study System.
This handy study guide is just that, a study guide. It is not a geology textbook. If you are preparing to take either the FG or PG exams you should already have a substantial body of knowledge under your belt. Therefore, this guide is intended to provide you with a detailed overview of the specific information and skills you need to be familiar with, in order to pass the tests. It is not designed to 'teach' you geology.
The information in this study guide is aligned with content domains listed in the ASBOG Professional Geologist Candidate Handbook. Under each main content domain category, you'll find a series of topics/subjects, along with concise overviews of what you need to know about each. For example, in the entry for "Sand-based depositional features" (pg 71), the study guide lists the major categories of these features along with brief descriptions. Sometimes the information provided is simply presented as a series of bullet points, and at other times in narrative format, or in a combination of the two. Relevant equations are also given.
The information provided does not go into a great deal of detail. Rather it presents just the most important points that you need to know for the exam. It also provides enough information to enable you to tell if you already have a solid grasp of a given topic, or if you need to go back and study the topic in greater detail. Most important, it gives you an idea of the breadth and types of information that you are expected to know for the exams.
This study guide covers both the FG and PG exams, which is possible because there is a great deal of overlap in the two exams. The main difference between the exams is found in the focus of the questions. Both exams are multiple-choice type exams. The FG exam judges you on the theoretic knowledge you should have learned as part of a four-year college level geology program. On the other hand, the PG exam is looking more at the practical application of the information you already know. In other words, it tries to determine if you know how to apply the knowledge you learned in school, in the field. In most states, you have to have 3-5 years of work experience as a geologist before you can sit the PG exam. Therefore, the practical aspects should not present a problem, if you remember the basic facts that you learned in college.
This study guide does not lists what topics are covered in which exam, and it is not really necessary given the extreme overlap of the two tests. However, if you are curious, the ASBOG Professional Geologist Candidate Handbook contains notes about what topics are covered on each test.
This study guide also provides test taking tips that cover just about everything from how to mentally prepare for the test to how to make an educated guess when you don't know an answer. It even includes some extremely helpful tips on how to spot questions that are worded in such a way that they are designed (or likely) to trip you up if you're not careful. These tips can make the difference between failing and passing the exams, and I found that the tips, even more than the geological factoids, were the most important element of the study guide when it comes to preparing for the exam. Even if you 'know' everything, it can be easy to get tripped up when taking standardized tests. These tips will help keep you from sabotaging yourself when taking the tests.
In addition, the study guide also includes a link that enables you to download an extra study guide that offers advice on how to study, aptly entitled: Study Secrets: Your Key to Effective Studying. This 89-page PDF file explains how to prepare and organize your study routine, and how to study for optimum benefit.
Throughout, the information is presented in a clear and logical format. It provides a solid review of the information you will need to know to do well on the ASBOG examinations, and many may find that reading and studying this study guide is the only preparation that they will need for the exam. If you need to do more revision, this study guide will help make that point clear to you, and it will help you pinpoint which areas you need to concentrate on. If, after going through the ASBOG Exam Secrets Study Guide you find that you still need to do a little more review in order to prepare for the exams, you may find the ASBOG Exam Flashcard Study System to be helpful.
The information contained in the ASBOG Exam Secrets Study Guide will help you to more efficiently prepare to take the ASBOG FG and PG exams, and by extension, to perform better then you might otherwise have done, when you do take the tests. Good luck on your exams!
